From the manufacturer:

The HIMS (His Imperial Majesty's Ship) Fuji is the first modern pre-dreadnought battleship in the Imperial Japanese Navy.

In light of imperial ambition of the Western powers, a powerful naval presence was projected by the battleships Dingyuan and Zhenyuan from Qing dynasty China.  The battleship Fuji was launched at Thames Iron Works near London on 1 August 1894.

Japan at the time did not have the budget to purchase her; an imperial ordinance was issued to save a part of the Imperial Household expenses and payment to public servants.  Thanks to these efforts, she was commissioned in 1897.

She formed the First Squadron with HIMS Mikasa and other battleships, and demonstrated splendid performance throught the Russo-Japanese War.  Later in her career, she was reclassified as a fist-class coast defense ship, auxiliary ship and auxiliary training ship.

HIMS Fuji was scrapped in 1948; she was the oldest veteran in the fleet at the time. Therefore, people call her "the ship that witnessed the glory and decline of the Imperial Japanese Navy."
