Adapted from the manufacturer:

For the 1988 model Yamaha YZR500, the old standard 60 degree engine angle, a holdover from the era of rotary disk valves, was expanded to a 70 degree angle in conjunction with the sump lead valves to maximize efficient use of available space around the engine. Additionally, the exhaust pipe from the forward two cylinders was angled under and across the engine to emerge on the right side of the bike, parallel with the exhaust pipe from the engine's other two cylinders. This arrangement required a novel frame configuration incorporating a dramatically curved and asymmetrical wingarm. The new bike design saw Yamaha clinch three consecutive Maker's Title wins in subsequent years, for a total of five wins in all.
